Review King of None

Wow, King of None was a wild ride! This fifth book in The Masks of Under series really threw me for a loop. I went from utter despair to flickering hope and back again several times. The sheer power of the King of All, the Aon-shaped monster ruling Under, is truly terrifying. You feel the weight of his dominance, the crushing despair of a world seemingly teetering on the brink of collapse. The Ancients, those mysterious creators, are painted as even more ruthless and manipulative than before, fueling my anger at their callous disregard for the lives they're controlling.

But amidst the darkness, there's a fierce fire burning. Lydia's determination, her refusal to give up even when the odds are overwhelmingly stacked against her, is both inspiring and heartbreaking. You feel her struggle, her internal battles as she grapples with the loss of the Aon she loves and the horrifying reality of the being that has replaced him. The supporting characters, too, show unexpected growth and strength – even Edu, who I initially found somewhat irritating, started to win me over. The friendships and alliances forged in the face of overwhelming odds are one of the highlights of the book. I really felt the intensity of the bonds between them, making their struggles all the more potent.

Kathryn Ann Kingsley’s writing is truly captivating. The world-building continues to impress; Under is so richly imagined, so full of detail and atmosphere, that I often felt like I was right there in the crumbling cities, alongside Lydia and her companions. The descriptive language is vivid and pulls you deep into the story, making it impossible to put down. While the narrative still cleverly uses multiple perspectives, this book seemed to even more effectively integrate this to enhance the pacing and understanding of the conflict. The pacing is fantastic. The plot twists and turns kept me guessing, and the cliffhanger ending... well, let's just say I'm practically vibrating with anticipation for the final book.

While I felt a few grammatical stumbles this time around (more than in previous books), they were minor in comparison to the overall strength of the narrative. The emotional depth of the story far outweighs any minor imperfections. This installment is more action-packed than its predecessors, but the violence never felt gratuitous or overly graphic. The romance remains at the heart of the story, albeit a very complicated and challenging romance. It's not explicit, but the underlying passion and connection between Lydia and Aon, even in his monstrous form, remains a powerful driving force.

Honestly, this series just keeps getting better. The evolution of the characters, the escalating stakes, the constant surprises—it’s all brilliantly done. Even though there are moments of despair, there's enough hope and the compelling characters to keep you invested and eagerly awaiting the resolution. I can't recommend King of None and the Masks of Under series enough. It's a breathtaking, emotional, and captivating journey that’s a testament to the author's talent for crafting richly detailed worlds and complex, unforgettable characters. Bring on book six!
